Time, Travel and Transition: Using Visual Strategies to Support Successful Participation for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder
Presented by Linda Hodgdon, CCC-SLP - Consultant Autism Spectrum Disorders

Sometimes the “little things” can cause the biggest problems for students with Autism, Asperger’s and related learning needs.  Their behavior and social difficulties often involve common life situations related to time management, changing environments and participating in transitions.

Communication problems are a defining feature of Autism.  Difficulties with social skills and appropriate behavior are frequently related to communication challenges.  The struggle with communication for these students is far more complicated than just expressive language.  Understanding the communication of others, trying to figure out what is happening and interpreting cues in the environment are some of the areas of difficulty that create frustration and result in behavior that is seen as disruptive or inappropriate.

Current research demonstrates most of these students display strength in understanding visual information compared to their auditory abilities.  Using visual supports capitalizes on that strength.  Visual strategies help students appropriately manage situations that are difficult for them.  The principle of visually supported communication is simple, yet the impact on student success is profound.

This session will explore simple solutions to solve sometimes major social and behavior problems.   Visual strategies are used effectively with students of all ages in both special and regular education settings. Participants will learn to:
Participants will learn to:
  • Identify significant factors in student learning and functioning style that affect communication
  • Recognize situations where communication breakdowns can affect the student’s understanding, behavior and participation
  • Use specific visual supports that have significantly improved student behavior and independence to participate successfully in school and life opportunities
